Integrated Community Based Arsenic mitigation Project (ICBAMP)

Goal of the project: To help people develop the skills and capacity to mitigate arsenic poisoning and to ensure their better health.

Objective of the project: To aware community people on the threat of Arsenic and introduce the alternative source of arsenic free pure drinking water sources and support to develop the skills & capacity of the people for arsenic mitigation.

Background information of the project: SHAREE implemented this arsenic mitigation project with the support of NGO Forum for Drinking Water Supply & Sanitation under its Dhaka Zone from 2007 to 2009 in e Gognagar Union of Narayanganj Sadar Upazila, Narayanganj.

Results: Through the project activity, the community people became aware of the arsenic threat for the first time in their life; school level meeting shore up young generation’s knowledge to make out about the danger of arsenic poisoning in human body; teacher orientation supported regular information dissemination at the school level for the new generations; religious leader found the program very impressive after their orientation and they started massive communication campaign to save the lives of the people; community people also started, at their own initiative, to find out alternative sources of pure drinking water sources.

Conclusion: The project developed linkage with the DPHE and community people and make them aware about arsenic poisoning, and what to do to keep them away from the threat. This led to better programming for SHAREE to manage this crisis where it is prevalent and making people aware to safe-keep their health.
