Ethnic people block roads for power

Ethnic minorities of five villages under Sadar upazila here Wednesday blocked two highways for two hours and a half, demanding immediate power supply to the locality.

Sources said an angry mob of Golabari, Kaladeva and three others areas put up barricades on Khagrachhari-Kamalchhari and Khagrachhari-Buyachhari highways at Golabari intersection as they had been living in the dark for seven days due to power outage.

Vehicular movements were suspended on the roads from 10.00am to 12:30pm, creating nagging traffic congestion.

Hundreds of Office goers and home-bound people, including students, faced untold sufferings for the blockade.

Aong-Prue-Marma, 55, a resident of Kaladeva area, alleged many villagers remain in dark for last seven days due to power crisis.

“We went to Power Development Board (PDB) office but the authorities demanded Tk 20 thousand for repairing a damaged transmitter,” he added.

While contacted, Aticram Chakma, executive engineer of PDB, denied the allegation of demanding bribes.

“We have already sent the transmitter to Chittagong for repairing,” he added.

Later, the ethnic people withdrew the blockade at noon following the assurance of PDB high-ups.
