Urban Governance & Infrastructure Improvement Project (UGIIP)

Goal of the project: Ensuring accountability of municipal management along with increasing efficiency in providing municipal service.

Objective of the project: To improve city/town physical facilities like roads bridges/culverts, town center facilities, drains, sanitation, water supply, solid waste management, slum up-gradation etc so that community poverty could be alleviated, and microcredit can be given to the poor slum dweller for their poverty alleviation and quality of life.

Duration of the project: 2009-2011

Donor: Government of Bangladesh and the World Bank

Background information of the project: To increase economic facilities and preventing environmental vulnerability, improvement and expansion of physical infrastructure to face poverty and natural disasters, this project was undertaken by the Government with support from the World Bank. It aims to improve utility services for the urban population along with improvement of the condition of poor community people living in slums. It also aimed to develop a closer relation with the urban poor for their poverty alleviation and safe-keep the urban environment at Gazipur, Sherpur and Narayanganj municipalities.

Results: Ensured active participation of women in municipal management and services. Capacity of the service providers also increased in improving town physical facilities, town center facilities, drains, sanitation, water supply, solid waste management, slum up-gradation etc.

Conclusion: Helping the urban poor, esp. the women through increasing financial facilities to them and helping them preventing environmental vulnerability; and improving and expanding physical infrastructure helps poor to live a better quality of life and reduce environmental vulnerability of the urban areas.
